High-pile fabric can look acceptable in greige form and fail after loops are cut, sheared, brushed, dyed or otherwise finished. Machine selection and costing therefore need one ledger that follows material from yarn packages to the final visible surface.

Define the intended pile construction, ground and pile yarns, loop or pile target, finished weight and width, surface direction, colour route and end-use checks. Do not group terry, uncut loop, cut pile and brushed fleece as though the same setup and finishing sequence produced all of them.

Build the budget in four layers: delivered knitting scope, development yarn and machine time, surface-development processing, and rejected or downgraded output. The first machine trial is an input to that budget, not the final quality decision.

Surface direction can affect panel shading and cutting layout. Specify whether the converter must keep pile orientation consistent and how that requirement is marked on the roll. The cost of reversing or mixing directions belongs in the route calculation, especially when garment panels or upholstery pieces are cut from separate roll positions.

Separate ground stability from pile appearance

Label ground and pile yarn by material, count, lot, package and feed role. Record delivery paths and consumption because pile yarn can dominate both cost and surface variation.

Run enough length to include package changes and restarts. A centre swatch from new cones does not reveal low-package behaviour or repeating circumferential variation.

Mark loop faults before they are transformed

Inspect both sides for low or long loops, bare areas, pulled loops, visible ground, lines and bands. Mark roll position, feed or machine index and every intervention. Keep rejected greige sections for correlation.

Do not correct the whole surface by increasing one setting blindly. Preserve the fault, isolate one cause and create an adjacent comparison.

Record every cut, shear, brush, wash and heat condition

Send identified sections through the intended commercial route and record machine, pass, direction and batch information supplied by the finisher. Pair each finished piece with its greige origin.

Changing the finishing recipe creates a new comparison. Otherwise surface improvement or damage may be attributed to knitting without evidence.

Calculate value from released surface, not gross roll weight

Classify full-grade, downgraded, rework and rejected material by roll position and cause. Include extra shearing, cleaning, inspection and technician time. Report accepted kilograms or metres per scheduled hour through the full route.

Repeat the approved setup after normal cleaning or stoppage. A second finished roll establishes whether the result can move from development to production.

No. The intended cutting, shearing, brushing, dyeing or other finish can expose or create surface differences.
